But I realize like you that it might not translate well to film.

Other thoughts: Lopez has never impressed me as an actor-or a singer for that matter. I agree that the director's cut of Payback was much better. I own that one. Also think Point Blank has been the best "Parker" movie made that I've seen. A few others I have yet to see. The Jim Brown, the Robert Duval, and the French one with a female "Parker." Statham I like, but the English accent bothered me. But after your review I might just have to check it out.Randy Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16627907086811387527noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-499247432649483938.post-34932536551340520912013-05-25T18:22:15.808-04:002013-05-25T18:22:15.808-04:00I enjoyed it and hope for a sequel as well.I enjoyed it and hope for a sequel as well.Kevin R. I liked it quite a bit, and was OK with some of the tweaking they did, as I realize Hollywood will probably NEVER do a true Parker adaptation. A small independant filmmaker might do one, one who doesn't mind having their film mainly play festivals.

I thought Lopez was OK, not outstanding, not horrible. But Statham was better than I expected. This is clearly Westlake's Parker seen through the lens of McLaughlin, Hackford, and Statham, and I liked the end result.

I honestly hope we get a sequel. If the film has legs, and does good overseas business, it could happen.Dave Plantenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-499247432649483938.post-16769945779888566132013-01-27T13:03:46.355-05:002013-01-27T13:03:46.355-05:00Never thought you were, but I'd love to see wh...Never thought you were, but I'd love to see what effect a Scouse action hero would have in the US. Like most Parker fans, my biggest concern has been over the casting of Statham. Lets face it, any character Statham plays is going to be an action hero and Parker is NOT an action hero. However, now that I have seen the film, while far from being completely faithful to the literary Parker, there were enough similarities to put this in my own personal "pretty good" category. If they want to give it another try with Statham, I am ok with that.

Cluecluelohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09584521484076926343noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-499247432649483938.post-78433649771924055782013-01-27T10:39:39.005-05:002013-01-27T10:39:39.005-05:00I confess ignorance when it comes to differentiati...I confess ignorance when it comes to differentiating different English accents. Liverpool was the first city that popped into my head, that's all. We'll just have to wait and see if that'll happen.

Kind of funny about GANGSTER SQUAD, in a grim way, but it was a far worse movie than PARKER so I hope it can at least beat *that* movie at the box office. Its budget is about half that of GANGSTER SQUAD so it at least stands the chance of being more profitable. Last I checked, SQUAD was losing money.Patrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01844617192737950378noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-499247432649483938.post-56061599818873770022013-01-27T01:00:22.554-05:002013-01-27T01:00:22.554-05:00Westlake would not allow the name Parker to be use...Westlake would not allow the name Parker to be used unless the filmmakers planned a series. They do hope to launch a franchise with this one, although early box office makes that seem unlikely. On the other hand (as I read on the Variety or some such site today), Statham's a big draw overseas and the budget is fairly small, so maybe.

The reason Parker was pushed back was because it was going to open against Gangster Squad. So they moved it. Then the Aurora, CO awfulness happened and the original cut of Gangster Squad featured a theater shooting, so they pulled _that_ and fixed it up to eliminate that scene, and the two movies ended up opening pretty close to each other anyway.
Trenthttp://violentworldofparker.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-499247432649483938.post-86184076197917855282013-01-26T23:27:05.754-05:002013-01-26T23:27:05.754-05:00Good point, Barry. I was kind of worried, especially when it was pushed back and then the critics tore it to pieces, but it was far better than they gave it credit for, IMO.Patrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01844617192737950378noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-499247432649483938.post-82447748262029305172013-01-26T22:55:04.364-05:002013-01-26T22:55:04.364-05:00I'm wondering, Patrick, if it's a fact tha...I'm wondering, Patrick, if it's a fact that the productions of POINT BLANK and PAYBACK were barred from using the name Parker, or whether the script writers changed it for their own reasons. (When Paul Newman played Lew Archer, the character's last name was changed to Harper because Newman had had a string of successes with titles that began with aitch.) Has it been documented somewhere that the name Parker was forbidden use in the earlier films?Barry Erganghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04305184548497082776noreply@blogger.com
